Dear heat wave,

Thank you for visiting Toronto and making it possible to do things that have been on my list for a while. I loved being able to fully air dry my curls. The humidity gave them a little oomph which was pretty awesome. I also appreciated being able to take my new Jimmy Choo sandals for a walk, and wearing sheer clothing without anyone giving it a second thought. Now I'm thinking I may have even overdressed for the occasion. If it's at all possible, next year could we just skip the part where I slept through my alarm because I had to keep the AC on overnight?

What better time to resurrect the lingerie as outerwear trend from last year than in this beautiful heat? Cue Dear Frankie, a collection of lounge wear inspired lingerie designed and made in Canada from eco-friendly materials like bamboo and modal, launching online on August 1st! Dear Frankie designer Allicia Martin set out to create a comfortable and eco-conscious collection with a dash of feminine sex appeal. It may just be the lace and frills you're missing for hanging out in, between the sheets or otherwise (from what I've seen, it would be a shame to confine these designs to the house!).

What else can you wear when everything you touch sticks to you in 40 degree weather (including the chair I'm currently sitting on.. so this will be brief). If you ever catch yourself hearing "Wah wah wah" trombone sounds instead of some boring speech or lecture, it's possible you spent hours watching Peanuts as a kid in the 80's. Charlie Brown's school days were an eerily accurate representation of classes and lectures I've attended, or at least the ones I've been awake for.. Which makes me think about how many years I've spent perfecting the art of pretending to listen.. Which then makes me think about how old I am. Maybe too old for Snoopy t-shirts - but never too old for some mint green pants, right? I spent most of my vacation overseas visiting friends and family, but in the two hours I grabbed for shopping I made sure to visit Pull and Bear and navigate the throngs of tweens to refresh my closet with some colour.

Covering Up - Books + Shoes

Last night I got to thinking about books and their covers (yes, I did just say that). I've decided that covers are like cute little outfits authors put on their books to dress them for strutting their stuff on the shelf. When I browse, I like to pretend it's a bit like America's Top Model -- "mmm this one's too skinny, this one just looks a little crazy, and this one is perfect!" Clearly, this is not the academic approach to buying books but it can certainly tell you something about the content, the author's style (erm, publisher's style?), or attract you to a book you might otherwise pass over. Who knows - if Anna Karenina featured a brunette bombshell in Victoria's Secret and heels, perhaps teenage boys the world over would be more enticed to delve into Tolstoy looking for the juicy details. Or not.

So what does the cover for Lindsey Kelk's new book, The Single Girl's To-Do List, tell us?

My scientific dissection of cover art aside, what I knew of Lindsey Kelk prior to the launch party for The Single Girl's To-Do list was that she had written two funny books in my possession - I Heart New York and I Heart Hollywood. The former kept me sane for two whole days on my recent trip to Jamaica where it rained for eight days straight (out of ten..). I had brought Lindsey's book along justincase I was inspired to do something other than pass out in the sun. Two pages in, I had forgotten all about the thunderstorm soaking my poolside cocktail dreams and didn't put the book down except to sleep and eat until I had finished it.

Having met Lindsey in person at the launch, I was delighted to discover that she is so much like her books - witty and undeniably grounded with fabulous taste in shoes (she lasted all evening in her gold VP Louboutins!). Other fun facts: Lindsey currently resides in New York, people keep telling her she looks like Adele, and she's got a great joke for all occasions. The event itself was a mix of gorgeous ladies, delicious desserts,and some very hot heels! Huge thanks to HarperCollins Canada for organizing and having all of us!

Easy Style: Europe Calling

Europe is generally considered to be the center of the fashion world. Having been trained from a young age to covet everything bearing a Made in Italy label and pay ridiculous amounts for the same, I firmly stand by this statement. There are North American designers that make beautiful fashions but just having Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana or - need I even say it? - Louboutin roll off my tongue sends shivers down my spine.

Trips to Europe, it follows, are both exciting for the discovery of new trends and ideas and scary for the inevitable judgement encountered with less sophisticated style and unwillingness to spend 25 hours a day in 4 inch heels. I salute those more dedicated to the pursuit of fashion and strive to join their ranks. Maybe not when I have to wake up early for work but.. the general idea is there!

I know no better examples of this dedication than my friends Sanja aka Baby and Jelena aka Barbie, two fabulous girls living in my hometown of Belgrade. In addition to being awesome partners in crime for shopping, cafe-gawking (a sport fit for the Olympics), or partying, their style inspires me each and every time we meet.

Baby, with her edgy style, has innovative ideas for outfits and mad creativity in accessorizing (the skinny belt worn as a bracelet from the Vampy Ballerina post was all her). With her ability to sniff out as well as start new trends and her understanding of what works for different body types, I'm convinced this girl should be a stylist. For now, I will take our shopping trips as invaluable learning experiences punctuated by caffeine infusions.

Barbie, on the other hand, has been putting up with me since elementary school. She is the person I credit with providing a much needed wake up call to fashion and accessorizing properly. The first time I realized something wasn't quite right was when I found myself sitting across from a well-heeled Barbie in a cute top and miniskirt with matching earrings and handbag -- while I was dressed in a black tank top, cargos, and runners. True story *winces* Since that day, I've kept an eye on her as the standard for elegance and a reminder that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

I want to thank Baby and Barbie for agreeing to spend hours posing in their favourite outfits while I swore at the camera and willed it to take the photos I imagined. The Europe Calling series which I will be posting over the next few weeks is for you, from them.

Sometimes it's grown-up time and your favourite Donald Duck t-shirt just won't cut it. Me, I'm a fan of Donald, and all things that remind me that you're only as old as you feel (my personal best is 16 :)) For times when duty calls or I just want to play dress-up I gravitate towards elegant, classic pieces that can be worn time and time again. So many of the looks from Lundstrom's FW2011 preview are exactly that - timeless classics in quality fabrics - that I might just have to invest in a few come August. The next time I feel a little more Chanel and a little less Disney Channel I'll hopefully have some of these around..!

I distinctly remember the first time I consciously rebelled at the tender age of 6. My father had taken me to buy my school supplies and we needed to pick out a fountain pen for homework (a cruel and unusual exercise in developing perfectionistic tendencies by the Serbian school system whereby children must write their homework in ink from Grade 1 to discourage the mere thought of ever making a mistake). The shop-keeper held out a pink pen with little umbrellas all over it and said "of course she will want the pink one, because all girls like pink". Oh yeah?!? I remember wanting the pink pen - but just to spite her I chose a purple one instead. Imagine my surprise when I discover, 20+ years later, that my closet is filled with all shades of purple and violet - by choice..

Did you know that every three seconds a body butter from The Body Shop is sold somewhere in the world? The product is just under 20 years old and already so accomplished! I've got a few kicking around the house (the little purse sized ones taking residence in various totes and handbags) so one is always within reach. It drives my husband crazy but at least my hands are never dry.. And yes, I need different scents and various normal/dry/very dry skin formulations thank-you-very-much. Last week, The Body Shop launched a product that may save my husband some grief in the coming months: the new Body Butter Duo! This unassuming little package is packed with two different formulations of the best-selling product to offer the right level of moisture for your needs. That's right, no more choosing between satisfying only the "normal" or "dry" parts of your skin. Once choice that still remains is which scent to choose as the Body Butter Duo comes in four new fragrances: Floral Acai, Macadamia, Sweet Pea, and Vanilla.

The lighter and the more concentrated formulation are divided in a cute yin yang pattern in the jar, begging at least a thought along the lines of "aww, you complete me". Such a coupling - pairs, twins, partners - dynamic duos of all sorts were represented in style at the launch, where even the music was themed to match. The duo of honor at the event were Canada's Olympic gold medalists in ice dancing, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. They were super sweet and courteous - not to mention extremely good looking - and I didn't see a patch of dry skin between the two of them (body butter at work perhaps?). The Body Shop's commitment to animal protection works well with Tessa's continued support for the Humane Society; kudos to both for championing such great values.

Having seen these first hand, I can vouch for the fact that ECCO took the same care in making the little cuties as they did their much larger counterparts. I'll even go so far as to admit that I totally covet those silver-pink sneaks. Maybe for Fall 2012?

Preview: ECCO Fall/Winter 2011

Danish company ECCO has been making high quality leather footwear for over 40 years. They make sensible shoes and my dad loves them - both likely reasons why I've never found that *wow* factor pair from them to add to my collection. Needless to say, I was surprised when I walked away from the ECCO Fall/Winter 2011 thinking up a mile long shopping list in my head (it might be safe to say that the brand landscape of my shoe closet is about to change significantly). High quality leather? Fully represented. Comfortable shoes to last all day in? That too. And the styles? Wow! There seemed to be something for everyone at the preview - flats, chunky heels, a pair of stilettos, ankle booties, knee-highs, and fully lined winter hiking boots. The men's collection was somewhat smaller but offered similar variety, from elegant office-wear to a few edgier stylish pairs. The best part is that while most styles will be available in a basic black leather option, there are plenty of other colours to choose from as well. This is most refreshing since I've generally found the standard for cold weather footwear to be "You can buy this pair is any colour.. as long as it's black!"

My favourites included the Kiev and Leros collections in both black and sepia, and the Medina handbag, available in a classic black as well as a beautiful cognac leather. The Kiev collection includes a black pump (above) and sepia lace up bootie (below) - both on my fashionable work shoe wish list. I'd love to pair these with a cute skirt and some tights. The Leros collection comes in a knee-high and bootie cuts with a great tread, to give maximum grip as you're hurrying along in these unpredictable weather conditions.

Beauty Junkie: Beautyphica order is here!

Oooh I love getting things in the mail! I shopped last week at Beautyphica (from the comfort of my own home) while taking a study break and it arrived a few days later. I knew ahead of time that I was headed straight for the NUXE product line, picked out what I wanted and then agonized more over the sample selection than the purchase itself (figures!). I chose to try fragrance from the L'Artisan Parfumeur collection and some Katima'A argan-oil based goodies. With two pages of samples to choose from, it gets tough! The package was conveniently sent by Canada Post and I was able to pick it up from the local post office since I have a knack for sleeping through knocks at the door (I can also testify to the fact that UPS drivers are NOT the most patient of people). Even before I got home I was picking at the tape to open the packaging and here's what was inside:

I came across these pics from last year and I'm wondering why I never posted them.. Realistically, the answer ranges from meant-to-but-got-distracted-by-a-shiny-object-and-forgot to might-have-been-drunk-celebrating-end-of-exams-and-don't-remember-taking-the-photos. The outfit doesn't seem nearly as cool now that coloured pants are all the rage, but I still love this purple pair - leave it to Miss Sixty/Killah to always be ahead of the curve! Easy Style: Chic Tracy?

Anyone living in Toronto knows how hard sunshine is to come by these days (umm, month of May, hi. Please feel free to show up any time), so I grabbed the chance to document anything at this point! My dad's porch played host to one sun-deprived blogger (moi) and one cranky photographer (le husband, whose favourite catch phrase these days is "Fine, but you're packing away the camera!"). I had on my two new staples, a fedora from Esprit which is great for rain and bad hair days and Stuart Weitzman boots which I insist on wearing and then spend the day trying to avoid thunderstorms or other natural disasters striking the downtown core from abusing the soft leather. I loathe you, crappy weather!

The first thing that came to mind when I found out about Beautyphica was - it's about time. Launched April 26th, www.beautyphica.com is set to become a Canadian destination for all things beauty. Based entirely online, they offer an assortment of bath & body and skincare products from sought-out brands all over the world. Almost all of the brands are first-to-market and exclusive to the site, with each and every one personally selected and researched by founder Solange Strom. Ainy, Apot.Care, Lost Marc'H, and Katima'A are just part of the impressive line up. Each of the brands has a unique philosophy or key natural ingredient, such as the sacred Schinus Molle essential oil Ainy uses in its organic cosmetics. The newest introduction to the site will be popular Australian brand Aesop, currently only available in the US at Barneys and a few boutiques (with three Manhattan standalone stores to open later this year). At the moment I believe the only line that is not exclusive to Beautyphica is NUXE Paris but these high-quality products are a perfect of a fit for the site. I could say plenty more about NUXE as I've been a convert since my mother finally convinced me that she knows what's best for me, but perhaps that's better saved for a separate post.

Preview: Banana Republic Fall 2011

Heart racing, palms sweating, butterflies in my stomach – definitely love at first sight. The object of my affection? A gorgeous printed silk dress accented with hues of marigold, burgundy, and brown from Banana Republic’s new Fall 2011 collection. Then I spotted a mini leopard print trench coat and long fuschia scarf which would complete my dream outfit and got infinitely more excited. In stark contrast to last year’s pastel and neutral-heavy trends, rich colours and brights are set to inherit the scene.

For fall, the full autumnal palette is represented in Banana Republic’s new collection, from rich red to grounded gray. The classic pieces also cover a spectrum of finishes and textures, including feminine ruffles and draping, cable-knits and faux furs, and will be perfect for the layering which inevitably accompanies this transitional season. As always, the standout offerings are Banana’s fitted trench coats for both men and women – spotted at the preview in leopard print, discreet plaid, and neutral solids. The overall effect is a season appropriate wardrobe which sneaks in a sprinkling of lingering optimism from summer’s flower filled gardens. I’m curious to know which of these pieces will be available in Petite cuts and I’ll be waiting eagerly to find out – the full collection will be available in stores by August.

Preview: GAP Fall 2011

Stating with certainty that the days of surfer-chic at GAP from a decade ago are over seems like an understatement. Although I’ve gotten some of my most treasured cotton tees from GAP over the years, I’ve watched with enthusiasm as every new collection shifted the brand’s image in a more sophisticated direction. Following in this trend are the looks from GAP’s Fall 2011 preview.

Offering a distinctly more muted palette for fall than Banana Republic, the women’s collection boasts a variety of pant fits for both work and play in colours like soft peach, ochre, olive green, and charcoal gray. A big focus for this season is the use of leather in construction and trimming. The collection adopts this luxe texture for everyday wear as seen in skirts, pants and leather-trim sweaters in addition to jackets and accessories.

A few different cuts of comfortable cardigans which have become staples in all of my classmates’ and coworkers’ closets are also included in the collection. Mental note to self: pick up a few in different colours as these seem to be a limiting factor in constructing weather appropriate outfits.

Preview: Nella Bella FW2011

If anyone needed proof that the fashion community in Toronto is all about feeling good as well as looking good, they need look no further than the success that Nella Bella Brand has had since its launch in 2007. Nella Bella is the brainchild of Toronto-based designer Tarek Al-Azbat who set out to create a line of handbags which would blend fashion and function. The handbags and accessories are made from all-vegan materials in a multitude of colours and textures and with the added launch of NB Man for fall/winter 2011, there's bound to be something for everyone. What I find makes Nella Bella unique is the combination of guilt-free material (which actually feels like really supple leather to the touch) at a reasonable price point.

One of my favourite bags at the FW2011 preview was the London bag, a multipurpose unisex accessory which is available in every colour of the rainbow - and a few prints for good measure! I loved that it can be worn to reflect your individual sense of style by combining detachable pieces including a chain strap and an outer pocket-turned-clutch. It's really like building your own bag from Lego pieces.. but the building blocks are way cooler.

Other favourites from the preview were a gorgeous weekender from the men's collection and a women's hobo purse that I loved in every colour displayed (and photographed accordingly!). It's quite easy to see how the popularity of Nella Bella has taken off and if last week's launch was any indication the brand should have an even brighter future ahead.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Miik studio with a number of fellow blogerettes and all around gorgeous women last weekend (thanks for organizing Val!). The best part? We were let loose on the new collection and got to try on the designs! It was incredible to see for ourselves just how flattering these cuts are on a spectrum of different body types. There is no compromising comfort and the range of colours is just my taste - demure charcoal and navy contrasted against aqua, lilac and magenta, perfect for this season!

LG Fashion Week: JUMA FW2011

Come spring or fall, it's difficult not to get swept up in the excitement that is LG Fashion Week in Toronto. One of the perks of living in such a fashionable city I guess! My work schedule kept me away from quite a number of shows I was excited about this season, but I'm happy I was able to make it out for JUMA. The brother-and-sister duo behind the JUMA label, Jamil and Alia, unveiled quite the colourful collection for Fall/Winter 2011, with plenty of flowy silk prints and multi-coloured cotton knits intended to be layered, draped, or worn any way one may see fit. Oh yeah, did I mention these are intended as unisex pieces? Not sure how well I could pull off any of these looks but I would definitely clear out a section of my closet for a few of their gorgeous scarves!

This season a second studio venue was unveiled at Heritage Court for select LGFW shows. In stark contrast to the flashy catwalk, this venue offers a very different kind of Fashion Week experience where you are right in the centre of the action (literally) and never further away than two rows from beautiful designs. Love it or hate it, let me know your thoughts!

Fashion week is coming - quick, look stylish!

One gentleman who requires no prodding in said direction is Toronto-based designer Philip Sparks (and you can see proof below). Philip's Fall 2011 collection was presented this week in advance of the looming hustle and bustle of LGFW and showcased an almost romantic take on Canadian winter.

What people love about these designs is the marriage of unique style and full functionality. Many runway collections, while wonderfully creative, are often paralyzed by virtue of simply not being wearable. In contrast, these styles are chic, comfortable, and oh-so-weather appropriate. I loved the maple leaf photo print pieces so much I *almost* look forward to cooler temperatures!

If you're someone who appreciates unique design and fine detailing, you'll love what Canadian designers Patricia O'Connor and Claire Warwick have in store for fall. The FW2011 collection from their Penicullus Bellum outerwear line was presented at The Spoke Club this week and met with a balanced mixture of delight and approval from the audience. Prominently featured in the collection are a variety of details and textures, including a spliced leather technique which I've tried to capture (see below).

I scoped out the current collection online ahead of time and was excited to see that this dynamic duo delivers edgy creativity (I've loosely translated the name to mean artistic warfare in Latin). In spite of this, I was honestly not prepared to leave with so many great impressions and a firm resolution to never shortchange myself by buying a generic coat again. Huge thank you to Gail McInnes and Magnet Creative for organizing this fantastic event and Penicullus Bellum for making it clear that life is too short to wear a plain coat!!!

Taste of New York

I love New York City for more reasons than I can count. As a gift from me to me I decided to spend the Family Day weekend with my extended family - Christian Louboutin, Bergdorf Goodman, and American Express. I had originally intended to chronicle a shop-'till-you-drop adventure but it turns out I don't come up for air much while giving my credit card a workout! Fuel for the grueling exercise of testing my husband's patience, however, often gets photographed prior to devouring so I present you with my favourite NYC treats ;)

Combine cold weather and a dress code and you get a black hole for inspiration.. I'm pretty sure at this point I consider taking out the trash an occasion for dressing up! Black Swan Inspiration (and Bloch Sales Spotting!)

Like so many little girls, I dreamed of being a ballerina when I grew up. I still feel the allure of a well toned body that I could have absolute control over to move with such grace.. but I also appreciate that my feet have only been abused by select designer heels in my twenties. For now I am satisfied to watch the super talented Natalie Portman take the turn in Black Swan (is anyone else super thrilled that she took home the Oscar for Best Actress???) -- and a gorgeous ballet inspired outfit. The hunt is on!

I recently discovered this fantastic Romanian designer, Maria Lucia Hohan, while checking out the Living in a Shoe blog and she's got some beautiful pieces that fit the bill exactly. I've never ordered anything online without trying it on first (especially from halfway around the world) but these dresses are gorgeous so I'd definitely consider it.. My personal favourites are Rosie and Simone.

No prima ballerina outfit would be complete without a good ballet flat and the only brand that qualifies is Bloch. It's been three years since I first saw them at the Social Butterfly boutique on the Danforth and they keep getting better (their SS 2011 preview was amazing!).

The shoes are not just fashion pieces - Bloch flats are crafted by professionals. Jacob Bloch founded his company in 1932 and they have been making professional technical dance shoes ever since. The expansion of the brand to include this fashion line in 2008 means we can now enjoy the same comfort and style. I've looked high and low to find a flat made from soft leather which would give enough stretch not to hurt after a long day of walking and Bloch is it -- plus Specchio in Yorkville is having an amazing sale with a few Bloch pairs marked down from $285 to $99! My size was sold out but maybe others will have better luck!

Usually when I try to dress age-appropriate, I end up looking like a little girl who just got through raiding her mom's closet. Funny enough, that's sort of what I did this weekend! I hadn't heard of Funky Monkey jeans before my mom found this pair at Winners and I creatively 'inherited' them. Um yeah so my mom and I are the same size.. And luckily have the same taste in purses! So while I guard mine well, I was happy to adopt this cute leather tote she picked up in Italy.

I think summer and I imagine a beach or a pool somewhere with a cocktail (in both hands). Clad in a fabulous swimsuit of course. Normally I browse the Victoria's Secret online catalogue and sometimes bravely order a swimsuit or two in anticipation of warmer weather. Cue prayers ("Please let me have ordered the right size and fit") because the hassle and cost of doing a U.S. return just isn't worth it.

Spotlight: Off the Cuff (newly renovated!)

A little birdie told me that Off the Cuff, the resale designer menswear store in Yonge & Eglinton's happening neighbourhood, had recently renovated. Ever the curious kitty, I had to check it out and used the opportunity to browse the racks and see what I'd want for myself (and if there was a chance I could pull it off!).

My favourite part of the renovations is the floor - these quotes were hand written by owner Lee Romberg, such a unique idea!

Easy Style: The Recipe Called for Brown Sugar

"There is no such thing as too many pairs of boots" I state, hopping up and down trying to successfully toss the last box on top of the growing pile on the shelf. I think I have a fairly reasonable amount of footwear for a woman. What I lack, as it turns out, is a reasonably sized closet to put them in which I discover when the pile topples and crashes to the floor. The experience teaches me that a) the inverted pyramid is not the optimal configuration for shoe boxes, b) I need a bigger closet, and c) I should wear boots more often as empty boxes hurt less when they fall on you. Thus I present the sweet brown pair that I snagged for $69 at Aldo a couple of years back at a mega-sale!

This week we were treated to a unique event as one of the top Canadian designers, Alfred Sung, unveiled a special edition collection with long-time partners, Mimran Group Inc. The BLACKWATCH collection is the newest addition to the SUNG Outdoor furniture line featuring a beautiful plaid print that is a favourite of the designer's (as he explains, he will probably buy just about anything if it is offered in tartan!). BLACKWATCH follows much the same principles that underlie all of Mr.Sung's elegant designs - a modern, practical collection with crisp lines. Comfortable too! As we understand it, BLACKWATCH will only be available by special order at the upcoming Interior Design Show 2011 so it will be a super exclusive and limited production (good reason to visit booth 2010!).

With all the recent press coverage of the upcoming royal wedding, it's hard not to get caught up in the buzz. And why not? Wills was quite the teenage heartthrob (mm hi, good looking prince, is this not what every fairy tale calls for?) and Kate is pretty with long legs and a classy vibe about her. I can't deny being curious about the who, what and 'wear' of the big day! Plus I've been yapping about moving to London for long enough I figure it's time for baby steps in preparation. Here goes..

Easy Style: Winter Stripes and Checks

Winter is not a very fashionable time for me.. It's just not inspiring! To review:

I don't like getting salt stains on my shoes and pants
Wearing a cute outfit just to end up looking like a penguin at the bus stop doesn't do it for me
My favourite heels present a hazard (so how do I get up to eye level with anyone?)
Any figure I may have had is obliterated thanks to eating and napping all day
Getting to malls takes twice as long (Dear T.O. drivers, please learn how to drive so I can shop!)

Easy Style: Parisian Date Night

If I were to compile a bucket list (as in, write one and not lose it in the mess of papers I call my work desk), it would definitely include a quality closet cleanout and eating dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower. Given the list's uncertain fate, I opted instead to use my recent date night as warm up. Closet rummage to uncover something with the tag still hanging on it - check. Brain storming to determine someplace I've been meaning to go for a while - check. For good measure, I threw in another first – try super dark lipstick!

This gray pinstripe sheath was my tagged find from two summers ago (shameful closet etiquette, I know!). I loved the dress choice but a shorter embellished necklace would have complemented the outfit better. Just when you think you have too many accessories.. I'll just have to shop some more. Awesome outfit destination: Jacques Bistro du Parc, a cute French restaurant in Yorkville I kept hearing about. The cozy and authentically Parisian atmosphere in this family run establishment was perfect for the evening. I indulged in delicious onion soup and learned what poached salmon is (fluffy pieces of omega-3 rich heaven). My appreciation for the food made it somewhat difficult to breathe since I was strapped in pretty tight in the dress + elastic belt combo but sooo worth it. I wish I’d paid more attention in French class to fully enjoy the experience but even so I felt a bit more sophisticated stepping out the door (didn’t last long once the cold hit me and I made a break for the car).

As a kid, there is nothing worse than getting clothes for your birthday ("thanks Grandma, I love this.. brown.. thing. And the bunny socks will be a hit at school!"). Fast forward a decade - fine, two - and me, myself, and my knitting abilities have produced a total of one rectangular scarf. I run to my grandma for anything more complicated. I also love when friends with great taste buy me something pretty in my size! Case in point - this beautiful blue sweater! There is nothing I don't love about it, from the gorgeous blue colour to the tiny red details. I might be breaking some sort of rule for dressing for a petite body with so many horizontal cuts.. What's the right way to wear a cropped sweater? Help! I'm thinking probably high waist pants or skirts to create the illusion of long legs, but figure it can't hurt to experiment?

But I've also discovered that it means I have to deal with finding the perfect length skirt so my legs don't look too short or overly stubby, especially if I plan to wear it with tights. I finally stumbled upon this wool-blend mini skirt at H&M in a few different colours, and essentially cleaned them out in my size. While it takes a bit of maneuvering to keep things kosher when sitting or crossing my legs, I found the versatility and aesthetics of this skirt worth it!

Along with the traditional sports fare the brand is world-renowned for, there's more in store for SS2011 from Umbro! We spied a gorgeous new line of casual wear sneakers at the preview. No bells and whistles here - just true materials like leather and suede used to create a neat walking shoe that is sturdy but not chunky. Priced at around $90-110 per pair, we expect they will generate a lot of excitement come spring!

Umbro Spring/Summer 2011 Preview

While we have mostly featured clothes and shoes we wear (or would like to) and those by virtue of our interests being women's fashions - we're excited to give our male readers some eye candy as well. What better way than with inside info on an upcoming line from the soccer giant Umbro?

Founded by the Humphreys brothers in 1924, Umbro has been making soccer look good for almost a century!

Umbro's focus for Spring/Summer 2011 is the theme of "1350" sportwear - clothing inspired by soccer but intended for the 1350 minutes left in the day outside of a 90 minute match. Central to the collection is a reinterpretation of a classic jacket worn by England's World Cup winning coach, Sir Alf Ramsey. Appropriately named the Ramsey jacket, limited quantities of these beauties will be available in specialty shops such as Gotstyle (Toronto) and Three Monkeys (Montreal). We're talking just over 50 for all of Canada! Each of the four jackets is unique not only in print and colour but the fabrics used in its construction - the Blue Monday jacket is made of 100% recycled material, while the Wooster (brown pinstripe) feels like a suit jacket! And the gingham print is just awesome. Seriously.

Checkmate - this is the one to wait in line for! Is it bad if I buy this as a "gift" and keep it for myself?

One thing we can say about all of the clothes at this preview is that the attention to detail is astounding. Little pops of colour on the various jackets add style to these sporty staples and the different weave print patterns and neat burn-out details provide dimension to the pieces (see below). Plus Umbro's traditional crisp tailoring will make you question whether you're really in sportwear - look good AND feel comfortable! Aesthetics aside, it's the little things that hint at the superior quality of these pieces, such as the heavier fabrics and nickel plated zippers, often complementing the colour of the garments themselves.

We also got a close look at the official England home jersey (2009-2010) as designed by Peter Saville including a special edition featuring an all over print of the New Fabric of England. The New Fabric of England print is an overlay of small St.George's crosses in four colours - with purple (alongside red, blue, and green) to symbolize the ethnic diversity in the United Kingdom. In addition, Umbro is producing the official on- and off-field line for the newly reformed New York Cosmos. The New York Cosmos were the legendary North American Soccer League force of the 1970's with the club boasting such greats as Pele and Beckenbauer.

Along with the track jackets and jerseys, we ooh'd and aah'd over the cool Tshirt designs. We also loved the cross burn-out detailing on a set of colourful shirts (choose from white, purple, black).

Shoe Diaries: The Cutie Bootie

I've paid ridiculous sums of money for shoes in the past but few of them have inspired the reactions I've gotten while wearing these caramel lace up booties. Aside from numerous murmurs and comments of approval, I've actually had someone chase me down the bus platform to ask where I bought them (Aldo, $120, purchased on a whim). Truthfully, at the time I was convinced I had dropped something or trampled someone's small child and considered making a sprint for freedom. Turned out not to be the case but the stacked heel on these is both stylish and comfortable so I would have definitely been able to make a run for it. There is a small issue of poor stitching at the front of the boot which could do with reinforcement, but given the price point and (surprising) level of comfort, these cuties have graduated to the top of my list! Doesn't hurt that I also discovered a long-forgotten belt in my closet in the same colour..

Our personal treasure trove is the boutique accessory shop I Heart Accessories. Owner Natalie Colalillo hand picks some of the most amazing pieces you will ever see packed into a space this size - and always greets you with a smile.

The store is chock-full of both trendy and classic accessories and has a quick turnover, so if you like something I suggest getting it on the spot. You'll definitely be able to find an array of the latest styles at reasonable prices (most accessories range from $5 - $25) and a great selection of Canadian-made goodies from brands like Foxy Originals and headmistress (another ST favourite!). The canvas shoe collection, La tennis Bensimon, stays true to its thrifty style by using basic fabrics like linen recycled from army sheets, canvas and rubber.

Of course, they come in every colour of the rainbow. Some of the traditional lace-up shoes have also been modified to an option with an elastic band to accommodate the fashion-forward who have been removing the laces from their sneaks all along. Spotlight: Evoke Salon

My hair drives me nuts. It has a mind of its own! "Does it want to be curly today? Or just frizzy? No, it might be a limp hair day after all.." These are all things that run through my mind in the morning as I'm getting ready and attempting to make myself look presentable (and not scare any children on the TTC to incite more wailing). Not for a lack of hair products either.. my bathroom is overflowing with them! Since I haven't been paying much attention to it lately, I jumped at the chance to join fellow Twitteratti at Evoke salon for some styling, tips, and general hair R&R by professionals.

At Evoke, we were treated exactly in the way that Ergys Tafilica, Jason Speziali and John DiMauro, owners of the salons describe their approach to service - in a super professional but real environment. This is a sizeable, busy salon that strives to prove how much it cares about its guests while providing quality services. Yup. It's pretty late but I didn't mistype that. Easy Style: LBD ++

A little black dress is classic - any occasion, any time of year, and NEVER goes out of style. It's the perfect wardrobe staple! Exactly why I thought it served as a great canvas for a bit of experimentation in honour of the upcoming Retro Style Lab from Shop Socials.

Holiday Shine from Banana Republic

Easy Style: The Doc Martens

When Tasha and I attended the Dr.Martens on Queen store opening party, we decided to test how these fierce shoes could be incorporated into our every day style. My outfit started off with a print tank, jeans and semi casual black flats. The typical sort of look I would go for.

Adding the Dee black patent lamper 14-eye zip boots from the Diva collection definitely spices up my look. It brings out that rugged urban styled chic inside me. Don't let looks fool you. These shoes were very comfortable, and I was surprised I couldn't feel the heel height at all. They were also very light weight, and the sole had good grip.

LG Fashion Week: THOMAS//

Michael and Drew Thomas, the design duo behind the THOMAS// collection, presented last Thursday's LG Fashion Week audience with a unique opportunity not just to see but to fully experience their artistic vision. Monaural beats complemented the androgenous, monochromatic silhouettes walking the dimmed runway in the designers' fashion week debut. Definitely the most interesting LGFW show I've seen with the crowd in full agreement.

Ode to the Queen

Royalty always has a great sense of fashion, in most cases anyways, and that includes Queen Elizabeth II. Upon her visit to Canada this year she arrived in style with a pretty and practical Fulton bucket umbrella.

And of course a lady can never have too many. The Queen has one to match every outfit.

So, as an ode to the Queen and to umbrellas that keep me safe and dry, I am fully equipped with my very own Fulton umbrella. According to Crave Toronto, Drysdale & Co. is one of the top places to be. This comes as no surprise seeing as the Danforth boutique carries a great selection of accessories, jewelery and great items to gift and be gifted with.

I was uber excited to see that the boutique carried Christian Lacroix Papier. Perfect stylish writing materials.

Accessories include, among many things, flip flops with really cute prints and heart-shaped bows, lovely wallets and clutches, and a large assortment of hats.

The boutique carries lots of little knick knacks, fun fridge magnets, cups and napkins.

Of course any shopping destination is incomplete without some pampering products. Drysdale & Co. carries creams and lotions from Principessa - beauty products for the urban princess, a variety of soaps, DaLish Cosmetics and other great beauty finds.

Midterm season always catches me by surprise and I really should know better.. Haven't had time or inspiration for creating or shooting outfits but I recently threw this on for one of those long days of lecture halls and 'adult' responsibilities (notice unfortunate lack of makeup).

These are my favourite boots from Aldo - found them ages ago when they carried select Brazilian-made models. They have outlasted every other pair I own and weathered everything from clubbing to snowstorms! I really liked the length of this vest when I bought it but I'm thinking I definitely need a skinnier belt with which to wear it next time.

Beauty Junkie - New Hair, New Me

After so much hard work and stress that I have been going through in the past months I decided to treat my self to a little pampering. And what's better for a new start than a new haircut? I decided to be adventurous and do my hair at the newly opened Vogue Salon & Spa.

The salon has a very luxurious feeling created by an an all white elegant look, comfy chairs and top products. The staff are very friendly and well-trained professionals. I had my hair done by the owner, who was trained by the hair master Donato. Judging by my cut, he's got the skills necessary to transform even the most hopeless, limpless hair into something worth a double look. My hair couldn't have turned out more fabulous.

Can't wait to come back for more heavenly hair treatments or maybe even a mani and pedi =)

Things I like to do when I am stuck at home with the cold

Drink lots of tea - Whittard of Chelsea (UK import) or David's Tea cure ANY ailment
Two words: Gossip Girl. Any season, any episode!
Play paper toss with Kleenex and my recycling bin
Make multiple lists of things I need to buy
Consider going out to buy things on said list armed with a face mask.. think better of it.

Wonder why I got sick in the first place?

I spent the remainder of today looking at the material I wanted to post last week but didn't get the chance to.. Now I'm thinking getting sick may have something to do with my general lack of understanding when it comes to temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Case in point: I decided to finally (um, a season later) try out the underwear as outerwear look, spurred on by a re-watching of Sex and the City 2 and Carrie's outfit in the anniversary dinner scene. It was a little chilly so I added a cute jacket but I made my point - I can let my bra pattern peek too!
